Spray are no strangers to revisiting their musical vaults to rework and refresh them. A slew of new tracks is set to follow The Big Idea and The Emergency Exit Man in getting what the duo calls the ‘reSPRAY treatment.’
Siblings Jenny McLaren and Ricardo Autobahn have built an enviable and dedicated following for their brand of danceable and subversive indie disco pop under the Spray banner. Perky, personal, and (not so) quietly political, the duo creates music that can make you laugh, cry, and dance – often at the same time!
Their musical DNA can be traced all the way back to The Cuban Boys (who still perform live, by the way), with plenty of shenanigans in between.
Jenny and Ricardo have achieved success by topping the John Peel Festive 50 Charts twice, engaging in cheeky Eurovision adventures, and collaborating to disrupt the UK singles charts on a regular basis, all while challenging the conventional pop genre with lyrics that deflate its pomposity and pretences.
Part of the inspiration for reSPRAY Vol. 1 is the band’s love/hate relationship with popular music. Though they often take a jaundiced view of mainstream music and culture, they still strive to create the perfect pop song because they love making pop music.
This first instalment of the reSPRAY series of EPs focuses on songs from their Living In Neon, Enforced Fun, and Children of a Laser God albums, adding some Italo sheen, electropop gleam, and 8-bit bleeps to the band’s witty take on synthpop.
Its four songs open with deep cut The Movie Of My Life Is An FX Showreel being given added bleep and Queen of Summer from Children of a Laser God getting some house treatment. I Kill with My Car from Living In Neon gets a dark electronic makeover, bringing us to Beg 4 More, another one from the vaults that’ll appeal to fans of Pet Shop Boys.
The first of a series of EPs, reSPRAY Vol. 1 functions a reminder of the band’s back catalogue and also as a taster for new fans to dip into the world of Spray.
