Start Together emerged in 2017 at drummer James’ house on Mt Glorious, quickly hitting their stride and gaining attention within the Meanjin (Brisbane) post-punk/shoegaze community.

Within a few months, the quartet had earned a reputation for their stunning guitar-driven soundscapes and energetic live performances, which saw them play on local festival line-ups such as Against The Grain, and play in support of local big hitters, including Sweater Curse and Hatchie.

The band wasted little time in releasing a string of stand-alone singles included ‘Xmal Inveigle’, ‘Being Born’, ‘Az Nem Várhat’ and ‘9617 rahamChapman’, which all scooped up plenty of attention on community radio, as well as overseas via online music blogs and airplay on BBC Radio 6. After six years of relentless gigging and writing and with a pesky global pandemic throwing a spanner in the works, the group’s debut album, Founder in Oddity, is their bittersweet farewell. Released in September 2023, the album is an intricately woven tapestry of driving drums, catchy bass grooves, grating guitars and soaring ethereal pop hooks, all blended to create dark, gorgeous, guitar-driven soundscapes. With subtle nods to The Strokes, New Order, Interpol, The Cure and Sonic Youth, the album is brimming with a vivacious energy from the rhythm section throughout its 32 minutes, matched with a charmingly frank, understated vocal delivery. Across its six tracks, the album leans into genres that could be defined as post-punk, shoegaze, post-rock, alternative pop and krautrock.
