This Bliss

After a busy 2024 culminating in the release of their Radiate EP, This Bliss are already applying the finishing touches to their new full-length album. The album’s title track is a wonderfully inventive insight to the sound and concept of Grave of Sound.

This Bliss is Jess Baggia and Nick Zampiello, a wife-and-husband duo whose blend of infectious electronic pop music, studio knowhow, and singer/songwriter themes come together in melody-driven songs featuring analogue synths and impeccable vocals.

Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Jess and Nick draw their inspiration from a range of artists, including Prince, Portishead, Nick Cave and FKA twigs, creating a retro-futurist nostalgia that will endear them to fans of CHVRCHES, Au/Ra, and The Green Children.

This Bliss are always seeking out new ideas and new sounds – as well as new ways to make music. So, it may be surprising to those unfamiliar with the duo that they looked to centuries past for the initial building blocks of Grave of Sound.

Jess and Nick embrace performance and writing techniques from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance periods to create a sound that is refreshing and contemporary, as their creative processes find a common ground between current technology and the music of the past.

Says Jess about the track, “Grave of Sound introduces the full album concept by blending classical choral samples with modern elements, creating a genre-bending experience. The lyrics explore how the practice of music parallels spiritual rituals, a recurring theme throughout the album. The song explores the significance of creation and its effects on the creator.”

“We intentionally create music that doesn't fit neatly into a single genre. By incorporating traditional song forms and analogue instruments, our sound has a nostalgic quality. This is further enhanced by the classically inspired choral sampling featured in our new album.”

Sandi Glowe looks both to the past and the future on is it the past that affects my will?, her debut EP for AnalogueTrash. Since signing with the label in December 2022, she has released two well-received singles - Silent Town and Where the Light Goes - and made appearances on the two most recent editions of their Label Sampler series.

“is it the past that affects my will? explores my dreams and my fears,” reveals Sandi. “It looks at both sides of the coin: feelings of hope and feelings of hopelessness. With the EP, I wanted to paint a world of surreal images to talk about feelings that we all feel and have felt.”

She continues, “I didn’t reference specific artists in the writing process, I have always been naturally drawn to melancholic melodies and that’s what generally guides my songwriting. However, in terms of production me and my producers had different references in mind for each song to add emphasis to the tone and message of the lyrics. The ethereal and romantic dreampop textures of Cigarettes After Sex were the main reference for Blackpool’s sound, for example.”

“Michael Andrews’ Donnie Darko soundtrack, with its John Barry and Ennio Morricone influences, inspired the production for Where the Light Goes and industrial rock acts like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry can be heard in the production choices for Silent Town and elements of She Holds All the Pain of the World. As diverse as that may sound, the EP works really well when played from start to finish in its entirety, something that was very important to me during the recording and production process.”

Taking inspiration from artists as diverse as Caroline Polachek, Kate Bush, Cigarettes After Sex, John Frusciante and Radiohead, Sandi’s creative output treads the fine line between dreampop, art pop and more traditional guitar-infused sounds to cast “gothic shadows over folk rock elements” (SKREEN B).

Sandi spent several years in Manchester in the UK, prompting her to expand her creative horizons and approaches to music. Shifting and developing from bedroom production and looping melancholic guitar melodies to working in partnership with producers has led to the development of her innovative and always-evolving sound. She has since returned to Rome to pursue a career in neuroscience research, but maintains her personal and musical connection with Manchester, returning there to record her music.

Arguably one of her most personal and introspective tracks, Silent Town’s soothing guitar tones and powerful percussion provide the perfect accompaniment to Sandi’s poetic lyrics and distinctive vocal stylings, the latter transitioning from calm and contemplative verses to thunderous chorus lines with ease. The meaning of the song is both multi-layered and highly relatable, as Sandi explains:

“Silent Town is about the eternal loneliness of the worried mind. It’s about those nights spent in your room feeling afraid of what’s out there and what’s inside of you. But it’s also about feeling hope from the outer world.

“A gust of wind can give you back life even for just a moment, reminding you that your anxieties are just something merely inside your head and that you can get out of that headspace and get some strength back in you. It’s about ephemeral certainties and about things you want to keep close and distant at the same time, it’s about losing control and gaining it back.”
