Flightless Birds Take Wing is the brainchild of musicians Marike van Dijk and Madeleine Cocolas, who have invited Meanjin drumming virtuoso Benjamin Shannon along for the ride on their latest album Ruffled Feathers.
Combining field recordings, synths, piano, saxophone, drums and electronics, their latest album Ruffled Feathers draws extensively from the diverse musical backgrounds and eclectic talents that Benjamin, Marike & Madeleine each bring to the album to further push the boundaries of their self-proclaimed ‘Tropical Ambient Bangers’ style.
As solo artists, Marike, Madeleine and Benjamin have created audiences throughout Australia as well as internationally through their extensive individual outputs and various collaborations. Madeleine's recent album Spectral, released on Room40, was featured as an album of the day on Bandcamp and received critical acclaim from outlets including Pitchfork and The Wire. As a renowned (Dutch) jazz saxophonist who has performed extensively throughout Europe, the US and Australia, Marike has released 4 critically acclaimed albums, including her latest album Stranded which was released jointly through Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records and ZenneZ Records. Award winning drummer Benjamin performs and records extensively, including in renowned bands Shamin, Milton Man Gogh, Kodiak Empire and more.
