Description: Kinko Sambino Live is a gloriously perplexing artifact from the early ’90s underground, capturing The Flaming Chi-Chi in his purest natural habitat: mild confusion and fluorescent lodge lighting. Recorded live in 1992 at Holland Elk Lodge #1315 in Holland, Michigan, the album consists of a single, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it track—“kinko Sambino (Live ’92)”—clocking in at a daring 1 minute and 14 seconds. Originally issued on the VHS compilation Dead Dog Records Various Artists: Live! by Dead Dog Records, the performance documents The Flaming Chi-Chi's supporting act performance for mock-rock legend Hideous Piglet Wild-a-Beast during their Levels of Reality tour. Even in this brief runtime, the recording feels less like a song and more like a cultural event that may or may not have technically occurred.
An absurd blend of folk tradition and gonzo anti-comedy, The Flaming Chi-Chi appears onstage in a tourist sombrero, shuffling with the unnerving commitment of an avant-garde performance artist or a lost timeshare salesman. Clutching two plastic maracas, he delivers Spanish–Pig Latin hybrid lyrics with unwavering sincerity, daring the audience to determine whether the act is tightly scripted or entirely improvised. The effect is equal parts bewildering and brilliant. Silence hangs in the air after the final shake of the maracas—then the collective reaction settles into one shared, eloquent review: “WTF?”
