The second album is here. This album doesn't really have any rules. I abandoned the notion that all the music must be 8 bit. Instead I simply hope this stirs some nostalgic. Chiptunes, fakebit, whatever. enjoy.

Ranger of the Old Woods

This collection of songs is really more like two albums in one:

The first six songs are a concept piece about a ranger finding a secret area in the ancient woods where she's been a ward for years. The story is told in the lyrics. These songs start with DOS ADLIB & OPL2 sounds, progress to Roland Sound Canvas (fancy midi), and end with two SNES-inspired tracks.

The following few songs are an homage to the old sci-fi, cyberpunk, and noir games we grew up playing.

Finally we have a fun track in both the NES and DOS styles... Lastly, I included two fully symphonic tunes.

There are two tracks that feature alternate versions. I have been thinking a lot about how older soundtracks used to sound different based upon the platform or even the sound hardware used. So, I explored that a little.

I tried to limit myself to different systems or styles more so than on previous albums. The results are a bit more "purist" than usual. I cheated a couple of times with a light touch of reverb, but most of the tracks are very similar to what you would hear on the original hardware.

DOS, NES, and SNES melodies were constantly running through my 12-year-old brain. Now that I'm older I've been able to go back and fill in the gaps. Recently I've been exploring the soundtracks from games and systems I never owned (especially the Sharp X68000 and the NEC PC-98). I've also been listening to a bit of dungeon synth... so you may hear a bit of everything in this album. It isn't designed to be any one thing, it's just the music I like to make. It's a tribute to those who crafted the soundtracks of our childhoods.

Let's take a journey. The album begins with a couple songs dedicated to the early days of DOS gaming. This may sound similar to the NES, but the typical Yamaha sound chips found in PC sound cards could be used in a greater variety of ways.

Then, in the 90's, midi became a thing and PC gaming music was drastically changed. You didn't have to rely on PSG/PCM anymore; you could use emulated instruments... many of these "instruments" had that distinct cheesy midi sound, but you could use them in interesting ways. The hardware had to support this, so you'd have your standard sound card plus midi. This is why you had to select separate sound devices for music and sound effects. The OPL sound chips could work to emulate these instruments using wav and FM synthesis... This had a really interesting, slightly buzzier sound, but it worked well.

So, in this album, I'm using a variety of styles including PSG, FM-Synth, SNES-style sound fonts, and midi... including the fancy midi sounds of the Roland Sound Canvas.

It's time for a metal album. All songs created in October 2017.

With Daemon Slayer, I really wanted to add some metal teeth to many of the nostalgic memories we all have. Blackthorne, Actraiser, Doom, Quake, Descent, Heritic, Fallout 1 & 2, etc. were all influences as far as the heavy sound goes.  The overall mood came while conjuring up visions influenced by old RPGs like Ultima Underworld, Daggerfall, Drakkhen, Vampire Bloodlines, among hundreds of others.

I had a lot of fun making this album. It is a bit weirder and more progressive than the last. I uploaded everything as a FLAC file, so the quality should be good regardless of the format you download.

Several of the songs were lost when an external drive died. We saved what we could, but ultimately had to leave a few songs off or give them awkward endings. I decided to devote time to the newer songs since they were better, in my opinion.

Work has been split between this album and a darkwave/80's-styled album. Several songs for the next album are finished as well. So, that one should not take as long to complete.
